New York State experiences drought, on average, every two to three years. These droughts often occur seasonally, peaking in summer and improving over winter. Winter snowfall amounts vary greatly over the state, ranging from around 30 inches in New York City and Long Island to 140 inches in Oswego, east of Lake Ontario.

Oct 30, 2024 · Key Points. With a few days left in October, multiple New York and New England stations are on track for this month to rank among their driest Octobers on record. Abnormally Dry (D0) conditions and Moderate Drought (D1) expanded throughout most of New England and eastern New York.

As of November 14, 2023, 5.6% of New York state is in drought (D1–D2), impacting an estimated 827,478 people. This is a 2.6% increase in drought coverage from October 31. Abnormally Dry (D0) conditions were also introduced on Cape Cod and the Islands based on below-normal precipitation and sluggish recovery of groundwater levels.

Dec 15, 2023 · Key Points: Lake effect snow and other precipitation events in the last week have taken the edge off the drought in western New York, with some relief to streamflows in the counties adjacent to Lake Erie. The hardest hit counties did not get enough precipitation to make up their months-long deficits.
