Aug 13, 2024 · On the eastern end of the MST, Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail has erected a large wooden marker to commemorate the eastern end of the trail at Jockeys Ridge State Park. Such a wooden sign would not be suitable for Clingmans Dome at 6,643 feet. The marker needs to be able to withstand the harsh winter conditions.

The Dome is a popular Park destination. Located along the state-line ridge, it is half in North Carolina and half in Tennessee. The peak is accessible after driving Clingmans Dome Road from Newfound Gap, and then walking a steep half-mile trail. A paved trail leads to a 54-foot observation tower.
