This loop is a great way to see Clingman's Dome and make a loop out of it, while also taking in another nearby summit, Mt. Buckley. A highlight: at the junction of Clingmans Dome Bypass Trail and the AP, you can step up over the ridge to a fabulous view of the north side.

The Kuwohi (fka Clingmans Dome) Bypass Trail drops 0.2 miles from the parking lot before coming to a junction. The trail goes off to the right and begins to climb uphill towards the Appalachian Trail (AT).

The bypass trail offers visitors high-elevation solitude in what is often a congested area of the park. Turn right following the Clingmans Dome Bypass Trail. You’ll ascend through nice corridors of southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest. Mile 5.1 – The Clingmans Dome Bypass Trail ends at a Y-junction with the Appalachian Trail. Turn right heading east towards Clingmans Dome.

The Dome Bypass Trail is the shortest, most direct route to the summits of Mount Buckley, located within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although the route is short and straightforward, certain sections are rugged and rocky.

The Clingmans Dome Bypass Trail leads you to the 6,580-foot summit of Mount Buckley, a subpeak of the range’s tallest peak of Clingmans Dome. A 1.7-mile loop gives you the opportunity to top Clingmans Dome as well if you feel like a twofer.

Jul 15, 2021 · From the Elkmont Ranger Station, follow the Little River Trail to the Goshen Prong Trail for a 13-mile trek to Clingmans Dome. Lightly trafficked with lots of river crossings, the trail eventually meets up with the Appalachian Trail in what becomes a westward rocky ascent to the Clingman Dome Bypass Trail.

Begin through dense bands of Fraser fir and red spruce on the Forney Ridge Trail. This traverses steeply past the Clingman’s Dome Bypass Trail (.15 mile). Forney Ridge develops some rugged stages to the Forney Creek Trail (1.0 mi). The path narrows as it steeply descends.
