Jun 19, 2008 · I'm planning on installing a ceramic or porcelain tile floor in my kitchen. There is currently vinyl sheet goods with 1/4 luan underlayment. The subfloor is on a 16' span, 2"x12", 16" centers, 5/8 plywood. The abutting floor in the dining room is 3/4" hardwood, I have a 6' and a 4' opening where the two floors meet.

Nail or screw the cement board according to the manufacturers installation reccommendations. After that install your tile but don't forget to tape the seams as you go and fully imbed the seams with thinset.

Then I checked the instructions on the premixed stone, porcelain and ceramic tile thin-set mortar which I am going to use to put tiles and found that it says: "Do not use over waterproofing membrane."

Forget about all of that other nonsense, you are on the wrong path there. Alternatives are Noble's CIS Membrane and Schluter DITRA Mat.
