The original jazz festival in Luzerne County — and in the country — was held in 1951 as the Cavalcade of Dixieland Jazz, and that event is honored with a plaque on Public Square.

On Saturday June 7 you can start your musical day at 10 a.m. with Java and Jazz at Abide Coffeehouse, 23 W. Market St., where Doug Smith and the Dixieland All-Stars will play a free concert.

It’s called "Memphis to Manhattan and Back," a jazz celebration packed with guest performances and acknowledgements. It's happening at 6 p.m. Thursday at the New Daisy Theatre on Beale Street.
