Austin city leaders on Thursday celebrated the hiring of Dallas police Chief Eddie García to oversee the city’s public safety operations, the fourth high-ranking official Austin has hired from Dallas since the spring.

A memo from Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax says Garcia will begin as assistant city manager overseeing public safety on Nov. 4.

The move reunites Eddie Garcia with T.C. Broadnax, Dallas' former city manager who took the same role in Austin.

Dallas police Chief Eddie García is retiring from the top law enforcement role in that city and will soon land at Austin City Hall as an assistant city manager overseeing public safety, the city of Austin confirmed to the American-Statesman.

Garcia will replace Bruce Mills, who retired last month. He will oversee public safety, including fire, police and Austin-Travis County EMS.
