An NBA insider shared an unsettling assessment of a potential Celtics trade target, raising new questions as Boston explores its options.

Monday unofficially starts the NBA trade season, as it's the first day that a lot of players who signed new contracts this offseason become trade-eligible. There are some exceptions, such as P.J. Washington, who can't be traded until the offseason, but teams that need to match salary now have nearly every option at their disposal.

The 2026 NBA playoffs will begin on April 18. The 2025-26 regular season wraps up on April 12, giving teams a short break before the postseason tips off. The Play-In Tournament, introduced in 2021 to keep more teams competitive and reduce tanking, determines the final two playoff spots in each conference.

It’s the unofficial start of NBA trade season. As of today — Monday, Dec. 15 — 79 players who signed or extended their contracts last summer became eligible to be traded. That means the options have greatly expanded for front offices trying to match salaries and develop trade packages that work for both sides.

Dec. 15 is a holiday for many NBA fans as trade restrictions are lifted for many of the offseason’s free-agent acquisitions.
