Alice Springs’ long-awaited National Aboriginal Art Gallery has been tipped to bring in more than 50,000 extra visitors to Central Australia each year, as new concept designs are revealed.
Aboriginal rock art is dotted throughout the vast nation, much of it undocumented, and some have speculated that the images could date back 45,000 years.
After vandals defaced some of the rock art in 1993, a locked gate protects the images. Now She Who Watches and the other rock art on the cliffs is visible only via guided tours.
The first major exhibition devoted to Aboriginal bark painting outside of Australia displays nearly 90 works to illuminate the continent’s indigenous cultures in new ways.
