A federal judge has blocked a plan to slash reimbursement funds the National Institutes of Health provides to public universities and research centers throughout the country, a plan both the University of Washington and Washington State University say would have far-reaching effects on their research programs and likely result in layoffs.

The University of Washington and Washington state are joining nearly two dozen states in suing the federal government over a change in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order hours after the lawsuit was filed and has scheduled a hearing for Feb. 21.
