The actress, who stars alongside Demi Moore in the body horror film, says it took "probably a year" for her skin to recover.

Margaret Qualley is opening up about the long-lasting effects she suffered while filming for 'The Substance.' The actress, who plays Sue in the body horror film, recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that her skin was damaged for nearly a year after filming wrapped.

The Substance costume designer Emmanuelle Youchnovski revealed in an interview with Next Best Picture that one of Margaret Qualley’s outfits as Sue in the Golden Globe-nominated body horror masterpiece was inspired by the “Houdini” singer, as well as Beyoncé.

The actress recalled what it was like working with prosthetics for her role in the body horror film, which also stars Demi Moore.

Qualley stars in the film opposite Demi Moore, who plays an aging film star Elisabeth Sparkle. Sparkle takes the "substance" in order to transform into Sue (Qualley) but there's a catch: the pair must switch back every seven days. If they don't, Sue will begin deteriorating (and, it turns out, so will Sparkle).

While Margaret Qualley has garnered high praise for her performance in 2024’s The Substance, she has revealed that the extensive amount of prosthetics that were required for the film took a toll on her skin.

"It took me probably, like, a year to recover physically from all of it," she told a podcast about the prosthetics used in the film.

During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Margaret Qualley revealed that the prosthetics she wore in "The Substance" "f--ked up" her skin, saying that it took "a year" for her skin to fully recover from the acne.

In The Substance, Hollywood star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is fired from her aerobics show when she turns 50. This leads her to seek out a drug called The Substance. After taking the drug, Elisabeth births a younger version of herself who she shares a consciousness with - the catch is she has to alternate living as each every seven days.

In 'The Substance,' Margaret Qualley wore a mountain of facial prosthetics, which had a detrimental effect on her face.
