Mazda continues to invest in internal combustion. The company has revealed that it's currently developing a new gas-powered four-cylinder engine that will introduce the latest Skyactiv technology. Called Skyactiv-Z, it will eventually replace the Skyactiv-X engines sold abroad as well as the Skyactiv-G engines that are sold in North America.

Back in May, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda took part in a multi–pathway workshop, signaling their commitment to developing new engines for an automotive landscape focused on electrification and reaching carbon neutrality.

Mazda has subtly announced that a new gas-powered engine is currently in development. Based on the Japanese car company’s latest financial report, the gas-powered Skyactiv-Z engine will be rolling out in 2027.

It will still continue development of internal-combustion engines, though, including both conventional piston engines and rotaries.

While much of the focus was on electrification, Mazda confirmed the development of a new Skyactiv-Z engine that is slated to be launched in 2027. The automaker didn’t say much about it, but the engine promises “more ideal combustion” as well as enhanced “environmental and driving performance.”

Mazda recently confirmed that a new, next-generation CX-5 is on the way, and it will be a gas-electric hybrid. In a recent investor relations meeting, the company also shared details about a new line of Skyactiv engines and other new projects involving a next-generation battery-electric vehicle platform as the company begins its transition to electrification and push towards carbon neutrality.
