An upstate New York salmon farm facing closure donated 13,000 live fish to a local food bank. With a tight deadline, volunteers and staff worked rapidly to capture, process, and freeze the salmon.

LocalCoho, a soon-to-close salmon farm in the small upstate city of Auburn, wanted to give 40,000 pounds (18,100 kilograms) of coho salmon to the Food Bank of Central New York, a mother lode of high-quality protein that could feed thousands of families.

When an upstate New York salmon farm went out of business, nonprofits had days to find a way to catch, refrigerate and clean more than 13,000 fish.
