A federal judge in Massachusetts indicated she would move quickly to consider a more lasting injunction after hearing a laundry list of potential adverse effects of the Trump administration move to cut billions in funding.

A U.S. judge extended an order on Friday blocking President Donald Trump's administration from slashing grant funding for scientific research that could devastate the budgets of thousands of universities and research institutions while she considers whether the National Institutes of Health's new policy is unlawful.

A federal judge in Massachusetts temporarily blocked the cuts from taking effect earlier this month in response to separate lawsuits filed by a group of 22 states plus organizations representing universities, hospitals and research institutions nationwide.

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley had issued a temporary restraining order earlier this month blocking the cuts. During a court hearing in Boston Friday, Kelley, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, extended that temporary block until she rules on an injunction, a more permanent decision.
