A baby spider monkey discovered by the California Highway Patrol this week is in critical condition, but the Oakland Zoo hopes she will make a full recovery.

The Oakland Zoo is kicking off the new year by taking care of a malnourished spider monkey that was found in a car during a traffic stop in Central California, according to the zoo and the California Highway Patrol.

A baby monkey was rescued by CHP officers earlier this week from a suspected DUI driver in the Central Valley. Primates are illegal to own as pets in California. The tiny monkey is currently living at the Oakland Zoo and receiving vital veterinary care.
