Yes, not easy by train. As said before Leamington Spa and Warwick are the closest around 8 miles away from the museum. There is also Banbury about 11 miles away. You will need a taxi for the last part of your journey. Lovely day out so worth it!
Would this be suitable for a young 3 year old? Is the play area suitable for him ?

There is a play area but I doubt if either you nor your child would be relaxed to offer you sufficient time to view all of the exhibits before boredom set in.
